Software Data Environments

SoftScience Group, Inc.(SSG) has pioneered the concept of "software mass customization", whereby modern software engineering principles are employed to produce specialized configurations of our products that address the unique needs of individual clients. At the core of each family of software applications is a common data environment (data layer) which represents an integrated database environment housing all the data that an entire enterprise generates or uses. Individual applications, modeled around specific job or departmental functions within the organization, have access to and operate on those portions of the data layer of the enterprise that are appropriate for accomplishing the function of the application.

Integrated Database Environment

Integrated Database Environment

For example, the softOperations Manager™ application provides access to the data that an operations manager for a small business enterprise might need including purchase transactions, bank account info, project management info, project accounting, client proposals, customer billing, employee time records, supplier relationship data (products, pricing, credit account info, etc.), and a variety of tools which can be used to operate on this data subset of the company's enterprise data layer.

By housing all the data of the enterprise in a common, properly designed integrated database environment, the data is captured one time, validated, and is available for use by the multiple functions within the organization that need to use the data. The organization's data is accessible by all who need it without having to maintain multiple copies of the same information in different application systems that are used to perform the different functions. In addition, a highly specialized product can quickly be produced by customizing software components for different departments within an enterprise while retaining a common application core and database structure for all departments.

Similarly, specialized products can be developed for different clients using the common application core and data layer schema of our product lines. Custom software at off the shelf prices really is possible. For more information on SSG's Information Technology consulting services, please visit the Software Engineering Services section of our web site.

In addition, SoftScience Group, Inc. has developed state-of-the-art software engineering and content management applications targeted for use by Information Technology departments that support specific industry-related user departments. SSG also use these systems internally to design, produce, administer, and support our software products and manage our consulting projects. These software engineering products include softSystems Analyst™ and softResource Manager™ operating on the softInformation Enterprise™ environment.

softBusiness Enterprise

softBusiness EnterpriseTM

softBusiness Enterprise™ is an integrated data layer designed to house all of the critical knowledge that it takes to effectively manage and operate a small, medium, or even a large business. softBusiness Enterprise™ provides a single naturalized data environment that spans the functions of that business.

By providing an appropriate richness to the database structures which allow for all information items to be collected and properly recorded at the moment the information is generated by the business's activities, the company's knowledge is built organically, so that it can be reused for multiple business purposes. Such reuse of declarative knowledge is a unique concept that has been pioneered by the SoftScience Group, Inc. over the past three decades. Applications that represent business tasks and processes all act on the commom declarative knowledge resource of the enterprise.

Many small businesses fail to make the transition from a small organization, informally run by the small group of founders who understand the inner workings of their creation intuitively, into a larger organization that can no longer be managed effectively from the founder's head and gut feel. During the transition from an informally managed operation to one that can support growth and change effectively, formal information systems must be introduced and properly utilized.

Because most business software systems were originally designed to automate processes as their objective, declarative knowledge – which we often simply call 'data' – was often seen as just an input or an output of the process rather than as the knowledge resource that it actually is. As a result, most software systems designed to support business functions are essentially knowledge islands that include only the portions of data that are relevant to the particular process being modeled by the software. Extraneous pieces of data that may be generated and known at the time are often discarded because the data storage capability of the software is designed around the needs of the process rather than the needs of the broader enterprise and thus has no designed place to put the additional information.

The alternative information strategy employed by SoftScience Group is to carefully design an integrated data layer that is structured based on the natural information relationships that exist in the real world for that data. Often the same or some of the same information is used in multiple business processes. By meticulously capturing that information and putting it in a data environment that makes it readily available to all processes which could use the information, a naturalized data layer leverages the knowledge available to manage the growing business.

For example, softBusiness Enterprise™ makes a distinction between operational accounting and financial accounting. Operational accounting involves capturing all transactions involving the business in their natural form as soon as they occur. Financial and tax accounting decisions about the transactions can be made later, so data collection can be initially performed by electronic data capture or human data entry without having to understand the ultimate accounting disposition of the transactions. Higher priced accounting professionals do not need to be used to enter the bulk of the basic transactional data of the business.

In addition, other non-financial information can also be recorded and appropriately stored along with the financial information at the point the information enters the company. For example, softTechnology Manager™ also enables the capture of other important information about computer hardware and software purchases that would not normally be captured by an accounting system at the same time the financial aspects of the transaction are being captured.

Company managers immediately have complete access to all the information associated with running their business so that real time operational decisions can be made without waiting to see the financial accounting results.

softBusiness Enterprise™ also works seamlessly with the applications of the softInformation Enterprise™ data layer.

softCorporate EnterpriseTM

SoftScience Group, Inc. (SSG), as a software engineering firm specializing in integrated business applications, has created softCorporate Enterprise™, an extended software environment for specialized corporate information management. softCorporate Enterprise™ is an expansion of the softBusiness Enterprise™ environment and is designed to house specialized information that a large corporate department needs to effectively manage its core corporate functions.

The larger corporate focus allows individual departments to use the naturalized data layer design of SoftScience Group's products to manage internal (departmental) business functions in the more heterogeneous computing environment – typically found in larger business enterprises – by interacting seamlessly with other corporate systems. softCorporate Enterprise™ contains larger enterprise data layer extensions to the more common business needs addressed by the softBusiness Enterprise™ data layer.

At this time, most of the corporate functions addressed by the softCorporate Enterprise™ data layer involve managing corporate assets rather than managing operations. For large businesses, operations will generally be supported by larger more specialized computing systems. Some corporate functions, such as corporate property tax administration are still more general in nature, so they are good candidates for third party information solutions. SoftScience Group's product offerings are designed to work seamlessly with the corporation's internal operations and financial systems. Comprehensive customized data connections to these other systems allow softCorporate Enterprise™ applications to become part of the company's core IT architecture.

SoftScience Group, Inc. specializes in developing data transfer solutions between heterogeneous computing environments. Our specialized software engineering tools facilitate the analysis and documentation of existing corporate computing environments, the mapping and design of data transfer between environments, and the implementation of data transfer connections across environments. Our software environment includes an integrated information architecture (the softPetroleum Enterprise™ data layer) that underlies user interface and tool layers (views). Each suite of user views (i.e. each software product) corresponds to one or more of the various technical, operational, and financial roles within an oil and gas producing enterprise. Each of these integrated products is designed to allow an individual to perform the complete range of tasks associated with that role using the data layer's enterprise-wide knowledge.

The software applications for performing these different tasks are built on top of the common enterprise data foundation. Interfaces for different tasks can "see" appropriate subsets of the common integrated corporate data. These interface and functionality groupings make up PSC's application software products including softPetroleum Appraiser™, softPetroleum Operator™, softPetroleum Data Scout™, and softProperty Tax Manager™.
